Gilles Vandenoostende

Hi, I'm Gilles Vandenoostende - designer, illustrator and digital busybody with a love of language, based in Ghent, Belgium.

  • As usual, time was of the essence. I made a quick series of sketches and we soon landed on a design that was equal parts child-like and recognisably "anonymous".

  • I turned my sketch into a real, printable 3D model, while the accounts rushed to find a shop who could get it printed on time for the pitch. Here's the first (and so far, only) print being modelled by the account (who shall remain anonymous).

  • A plain white mask doesn't feel like V, so we found a painter who could replicate the traditional decorations.

Boy Fawkes Mask

A secret little project made for a pitch for a client who shall remain nameless. The concept involved little children pretending to be the cyber-activists known as "anonymous", complete with a child's version of the iconic Guy Fawkes (or V for Vendetta) mask.

In a little under 3 days, we went from idea, to sketch, to printable 3D file, to printed mask, to finished product. It was all quite stressful because, due to time constraints, if the print failed that would've been it. So I had to make an educated guess towards the correct size and thickness, which thankfully worked out great.

The client ended up going with one of the other routes that was pitched, but that's life in the advertising game for you.
